Borough Council.

A special meeting of the Borough Council in connection with the striking of a rate for the ensuing year was held last Friday His "Worship the Mayor and Crs Whitehead, Poulgrain, Foy and Davy were present. In accordance with notice Or Foy ; moved: —•

"That in accordance with section 37 aud the sub-sections thereof of " The Rating Act, 1894," the Council make the following rates for the|year ending June 30th, 1897 ; a general rate of Is in the £ on the rateable value of all rateable property within the Borough of Thames; also a separate library rate of one penny in the £ on the Rateable value of such, property aforesaid; also a separate Hospital and Charitable Aid rate of sixpence in the £ on the rateable value of such property aforesaid ; also a separate water rato for ordinary supply upon all lands and buildings to which water is supplied whose rateable value on the valuation roll of the Borough of Thames does not exceed twenty pounds, a rate of ten shillings per annum; exceeds twenty pounds, a rate of two pouuds ten shillings per cent on such "value ; upon all lands and buildings to •whicK water can be but is not supplied, situate within one hundred yards from any part of the water works, a rate of one half of the j rate above mentioned ; and in respect of the j extraordinary water supply such rates and charges as are provided in by-law No. 20, and such other charges as may from time to time be fixed by the Council; and with respect to all persons receiving ordinary water supply to their dwellings and premises situate outside the limits of the Borough of Thames j such rate and charges shall be respectively: j Upon each house or premises containing not more than five (5) rooms, a rate of ten shillings (10s) per annum ; upon each house or premises containing more than five rooms but not more than seven (7) rooms, a rate of twenty-two shillings and sixpence (22s Od) per annum ; and upon each house or premises containing more than seven rooms a rate of thirty shillings (30s) per annum. That each of such rates will be for one year, commencing on the Ist day of July, 1896, and ending on the 30th day of June 1897, and that each of such rates are payable in one sum on the 2nd day of July, 1896 at.the office of the Thames Borough Council." The motion was seconded and duly carried and that concluded the business.
