THE FIRE IN BLOCK II MINE

The smoke from the Broken Hill mine was greatly diminished on Saturday, and the outlook was somewhat brighter.
It was believed the fire was practically under. \ 8 However, when the operations of a; fighting the fire were resumed at noon c to-day, at first apparently .only steam P was issuing, but when the two shafts were opened smoke immediately com." menced in large volumes, and it ib c apparent that the fire is still burning i fiercely. ' The shafts were at once closed, and ( the water again turned on. The fire is working from the north I to the southern portions of the tuine. j The carbonic has not yet been re-tried. This day. 120,0 MEN IDLE. The opening of the shafts proved 1 that the fire had a thorough hold in ' the mine, and was gaining ground, b although a million gallons of water t per day have been poured ia since 3 Monday last. f The directors are loth totry carbonic acid gas, but if the present methods s prove futile much lontrer, an attempt with this gas as a last resort will lie r made on a large scale. Everything is c in readiness for this emorgecy.
The fire has thrown 1200 men out of employment.
