DEATH OF THE DUKE OF CLARENCE AND AVONDALE.

[Peess Association.] London, January 14, The Duke of Clarence and Avondale succumbed to his illness at 9 o'clock this morning. HVH.H. Alborfc Viotor, Duke of Olarenoe and Avondale, Ist Duke o', and Earl of Afchlone, eldest eon of T.HR. the Prince and Princess of Wales, wsb birn January Bth, 1864, and was educated at Trinity College, Otmbridge, and University of Heidelberg. Previous to bis entering as an undergraduate, however, he had passed two years as a naval oadet on board the Britannia, and in 1879 started with his brother Prince George of Wales on a voyage round the world in the Bacchante. He returned to England in 1882. On leaving the University Prince Albert Tic* tor proceeded to Aldershot to prepare for the army. H.R.H. was invested with the Order of the G-arler in 1883, In company with his brother he vhited Ireland in 1887 j he was created hon. L.LD. of Cambridge in 1888. H.E.H. returned in the spring of 1890 from his visit to India, and took his seat in the House of Lords on June 23rd. An illness, whioh prevented H.S.H from performing not a few public functions, created alarm towards the end of the London season, during whioh he had baen more than usually en evidence. Latee.
