Wellington, Last night.
. It is just possible tba% after all there may be no contest for the Speakerahip. Owing to the absence of Messrs Backland and Goldio, the full strength of the Gorernmsat party will not bo available, and as the voting is certain to be tolorably close, Ministers will not put forth Mr P.olleston unless they are absolutely certain of oarrying hia election. The Opposition are very Baaguine of Msjor Bteward if matters arc pressed to a divisioa, and will not agree to any compromise. SIR F. WHITAKEE TO BESIGN. Sir F. Whitaker has decided to resign bis seat ia the legislative Council at the end of the present session, and take no further part in polities,
