PAEKOA.—This day
Mr Alfred Shepherd THROWN FSOM HIS HOKSE AND
SERIOUSLY INJURED
Mr Alfred Shepherd, of Karangahake, met with a serious accident yesterday evening by being thrown from his horse near Paeroa, while returning home. He is now quite unconscious, and concussion of the spine and brain is feared.

AUCKLAND.—Lasfc night. Another Fire.
A 6tore and dwelling house at Howick, the property of J. Borrow, together with their contents, and also an empty cottage owned by H. Coffey, were burned down to*day. Borrows store, residence, and stock were insured in the North British Office, but the amount is at present unknown.
This day. Auckland Caledonian Society
At the Caledonian Society meeting last night 60 members were enrolled, and the following officers were nominated :—Presidents, Dr Campbell and Mr James Stewart, G.E ; vice-presidents, Dr Walker and Capt. McKenzie ; treasurer, W. Pit kethley ; secretary, Edmiston.
At Binney's wool sale yesterday the prices realised were a penny per lb. over last year; longwool, 6d to 7d ; crossbred, 6fd to BJd ; merino, 8d to B|d. The insurances on the Howick fire are —Barrow's store £250, and stock £150, both in the North British.
NEW PLYMOUTH.—This day. A Perjury Case.
Another alleged perjury case will shortly be heard here, the Rev. Mr Breach having aworn an information against one of the witnesses, in the case having reference to the Presbyterian Church affair. The charge will be heard on December 14th. Fifteen witnesses will be called, and the localities from which they are to be subpoenaed are between Auckland and Dunedin.

Jas. Bell, alias Walls, who was com* mitted for trial last week on a charge of stea ing four bags of wool from the New Z-aland Co.'s Pareora estate, was to-day sentenced to three months' hard labor for stealing one bag of wool, valued at 30s, from the same company. The prisoner had only just completed two years' imprisonment at Dunedin for stealing wool. The weather has now cleared up, but it is still cold. Sailing Hatch. A friendly sailing match between the ship Bangitikei's cutter and the Naval Artillery logger, came off this afternoon, the distance being about two and a-quar-ter miles out against wind, and home, and was won by the itangitikei with 12mins. to spare. The lugger is considered a fast sailer, but the ship's boat is well'knowo aa a clipper.
DUNEDIN .—This day.
The Great Eastern Company at Naseby Bough Bidge have obtained 2050zs of gold from 65 tons quartz since October, and have crashed 120 tons yielding over 4OOozB.
Intelligence has been received that Mr Forrest, of the National Bank, died on the Bimntafca during the passage from England. Drank Himself to Death. William Sinclair, shepherd at Lee Flat, drank himself to death at the Lee Stream Hotel, having been on a drinking bout there for nine days, The deceased, who had hitherto been strong and healthy, and ii worth money, was unaccustomed to drink, ;■... ;.._.:: ■•■■;"■•■ '• ; ; -.•'■■■ ■;,
At the inquest on young Black a verdict of " Accidental death " was returned ; no blame was attached to anyone.
