[Received March 5, 1.40 p.m.] Meibottbne, This day. To-day being the day fixed for the general election, has been proclaimed a public holiday throughout Victoria. Adelaide, Thia day. The Commercial BankCrookes, the late manager of the Commercial Bank of South Australia, has been admitted to bail. The Associated Bank have -resolved to cash the notes of the Commercial Bank if the gold belonging to the Bank, and now deposited in two banks in Adeliade, is distributed among all the Banks belonging to the Association. Public feeling is generally in favor of the resumption of business by the Commercial Bank.
Sydney, Yesterday. The Rotomahana sailed this afternoon for Auckland. The Wakalipu left for Wellington to night. , Addressing his constituents, Sir Patrick Jenriings advocates a policy of economy in the various branches of the Public Service ; he r.lso pronounces himself in favour of the imposition of direct and indirect taxation in order to clear off the present deficiency in the revenue without deloy. -
