The defence works at Lyttelton are ap. preaching completion. The practice gun at Officers Point will be mounted to» morrow. The 64-pounder at Middle Bluff will soon be mounted, and weather permitting the seven-ton gun will be at the battery and will be up in a few days. It is stated that Government intend establishing two more batteries, one on Hi pa Island' and the other on the southern Camp Bay, both to be armed with 8 inch breach-loading 12^-ton guns.
