Thames Borough Council.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council wag held at the Council Chambers last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs Graham, Meunie, Price, Wilson, McGowan, Speight, Hansen, Ehrenfried, Brassey. minutes . The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. OTJTWABD COEBESPONDENCE. A precis of the outward correspondence was read. THE EAILWAY CONTHACT. A. letter was read from Mr Souter, asking permission to make tramway extensions, etc., in conection with his contract. He also lodged plans, etc., of the intended extensions. Cr Price moved the granting of the application for a term of nine months, subject to clause 7 Thames Borough Tramways Act, at a yearly rental of Is, and bonds for £100 for the due performance of the conditions of an agreement. Cr Graham seconded. Carried. WAIOTAHI TAILING PITS. Complaints having been made of the dangerous nature of the Waiotahi tailings pits, the Mining Inspector wrote the Council, stating that he thought the I Borough should take the necessary precautions against accidents. The writer enclosed a letter from Mr Smith, the manager, stating that the position of the pits had beea altered to suit the convenience of the Council.—Several members of the Council thought that the Council was not liable to protect the pits with a railing.—Cr Speight moved that the Council provide the cost of making the railing, but refuse to take any responsibility.—This was carried. CASH. A letter was read from the Treasury remitting 12s 6d to the Borough Fund Account. C HABITABLE AID. . A letter was read from the County Council stating that the letter of the Council re the charitable aid meeting would be laid before the Council at its next monthly meeting. SCABLET FEVEB. Dr Payne wrote to the Council reporting a mild case of scarlet fever near Sealey street. Eeceived. "WATEB SUPPLY COMMITTEE. A letter was read from the Secretary to the Water Committee, enclosing a resolution of the Committee passed at their late meeting. Received. U.P.A. A letter was received from the Secretory U.P.A., showing that the balance necessary for payment of January accounts was £48 18s lid. CEMBTEBT BBIDGE. The Secretary to the Cemetery Committee wrote to the Council, stating that at a meeting of the Committee it had been resolved to ask the Council to contribute to the cost of the bridge on Cemetery Road over Hape Creek. The writer referred to the arrangement made between the various local bodies to the effect that each should contribute their share of the cost of works agreed to by Cemetery Committee. The writer asked was the Council willing to stand by this agreement. '

The Mayor said this letter arose from the fact that the County members of the Committee had refused to pledge their body to contribute a share of the cost of the cemetery bridge without a direct authority from the County Council. Cr McGowan thought that the Committee had been unwise in sending the letter to the Council.

Cr Speight moved that the Council see no reason for departing from the existing agreement on cemetery matters. Car* ried. THE DEDUCTION OF TEAM WAT BATES. The committee appointed to report on the matter of Mr Souter's rent for the Grahamstown and Tararu Tramway was read. The Committee did not consider the rent should be reduced. The report was adopted on the motion of Cr Speight. BBPOBT OP BELIEVING OFFICES. The report of the Believing Officer, containing a large amount of information respecting the members and circumstances of persons from the Thames in the Lunatic Asylum, Orphan's Home, and Old Men's Refuge, was read, Ordered to be referred to the Charitable Aid Committee. FINANCE. The wages sheet and accounts for several small contracts amounting in all to £71 were passed for payment. It was resolved that the accounts be paid on the motion of Cr Price. ME E. H. POWEE. Cr Brassey asked had Mr E. H. Power sent any receipt for his cheque. The Town Clerk said he had not, but he had cashed the cheque. Cr Brassey said that he asked the question because Mr Power had requested him while in Wellington to ask the Council to send down the balance. KAITANGATA DISASTEB. At the suggestion of Cr Graham a subscription list in aid of the sufferers by the Kaitangata disaster was handed round, and £8 5s was collected.
