Thames Scottish Battalion.
MONTHLY INSPECTION OF Nos.
1 AND 2 COMPANIES
The monthly inspection of these two fine companies eventuated at the drill shed last evening, there being a large attendance of the general public, including a number of ladies. The chief interest was evidently centred on the No. 2 Company, whose first inspection in uniform it was. They mustered 50 strong in the ranks, and the No. 1 had a similar number. Including officers and the battalion band there were 150 present. Iv the absence of Major Withers, Major Murray was inspecting officer, and the companies having been put through the manual and rifle exercises, the parade formed open order for inspection. This being over, three sides of a hollow square were formed, and Major Murray called Vols. G. Price (No. 1) and G. Lawlor (No. 2) to the front, and presented to them the champion belts of their respective companies, which were fixed on their shoulders by Mr^s Eilgour. She also handed to Vol. Price the Bobinson medp.l, which, he having won thrice, becomes his own property. Money prizes were then handed to Drum-Major McLean, Sergts. Heron and McLeod, Vols. Weir, Downie, Trenwith, White, and Buckley. Then came the principal item of the programme of the evening, viz., the presentation to Lieut. P. Johnston of No 1 Company of a handsome regulation basket • hilted sword, belts, and a silver hunting watch subscribed for by members of No. 1 as an acknowledgement of their appreciation of his services to the company. Battalion Surgeon Kilgour in making the presentation complimented the recipient on the fiae appearance of his company, which he was informed was in a great measure due to his (Lieut. Johnston's) exertions. The recipient in a few well chosen remarks thanked his company for the present. Surgeon Kilgour having addressed a few words of compliment to No. 2 Company a march out was ordered, and the battalion proceeded as far as the Karaka bridge, and having returned to Grahams* town, were dismissed.
