STEVENS' CLAIM (TAPU).

To-day Mr Stevens, the lucky proprietor of the new find at Tapti, brought down the first practical results of new enterprise in. the shape of' a splendid looking ingot of gold weighing 20£ozs. This waß the produce of 3| tons of dirk taken -from'-the lode, and included* no specimens. The gold is worth about £3 8s per ounce. Mr Stevens gives Mr Ivy, underviewer of mines, the credit.of helping to put him into the patch. When the lode was first cut it didn't show much gold, but after a few feet good gold was come upon. The lode if composed of three hard ribs of brown quarts, one on •the footwall, the other on the hanging; wall, and the' third in the centre. The interstices between these ribs are filled with mullocky crushing stuff which yieldi splendidly, and indeed it is from this sort of stuff that the most' of the. gold referred to above was obtained,, the quartz being reserved for another trial. A rise has been put ap 25 feet, and a winze sunk eleven feet—splendid pros* pects being met with in both. In the winze the lode appears to be opening out, and though the show is not quite so general as in the drive, the gold is heavier. There are about 180 feet of backs above the drive, and the claim can be worked to over 180 feet below the drive without the men being troubled with water. >. Mr Stevens and his sons are working theclaim, and.one of the latter worki th« battery by himself. •' •■;'
