NEW CARDINALS CREATED

Thirty-Two Prelates Named LONDON. Dec. 23. The Pope has announced early the conferment of cardinals’ hats on 32 prelates. They will be distributed as follows: One each to England, Canada, Australia, Poland, Armenia, China, and the Portuguese Empire; two to Spain: three each to Germany. Central Europe, and France: four each to the United States and Italy; six to South and Central America. This is the largest creation of cardinals for four centuries and for the first time leaves the Italians with a small minority in the Sacred College.

A Consistory will be held on January 18 to confirm the appointments. It is expected that the Pope will broadcast from the Vatican radio to-morrow explaining the choice of the new cardinals and the reasons for the delay in holding the Consistory. Prominent conferments are the Archbishop of Westminster (Dr. Bernard Griffin), the Archbishop of Toronto (Dr. James MacGuigan'. the Archbishop of Sydney (Dr. Norman Gilroy), and Archbishops Francis Spellman (New York). Samuel Stritch (Chicago), John Glen (St. Louis), Edward Mooney (Detroit), and Bishop Conrad von Preysing (Berlin) A shortage of red silk is one of the reasons why the Pope has been obliged to delay the appointment of the new cardinals, states the Associated Press correspondent at the Vatican. A Consistory will prob bly be held next soring for the creation of the new cardinals. It might have been convoked sooner if the fabric required for the clothing had been available.

Each cardinal, at present Rome prices, would have had to pay from £6250 to £7500 sterling for the wardrobe, including his red robes, erminetrimmed purple cape and uniforms for his attendants.
