KING’S TELESCOPE
Award To N.Z. Naval Cadet (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 1. Naval Cadet Neil D. Anderson, R.N.Z.N., son of Mr Eric D. Anderson, Hastings, has received the unusual distinction of having been awarded the King’s telescope on the completion of his naval cadet training in the training cruiser H.M.S. Frobisher, says a statement issued by the Minister of Defence. The award is a telescope presented by the King at the end of each cadet training term to the best all-round special entry cadet, and this is the first time it has been won by a New Zealand cadet and only the second time it has been awarded to a Dominion cadet. The telescope, embossed with the Royal Crest, was presented to Cadet Anderson bj' the Fifth Sea Lord of the Admiralty, RearAdmiral T. H. Troubridge, D.S.C. and Bar.
Cadet Anderson was entered in the R.N.Z.N. a year ago, and commenced training at the Royal Naval College at Eaton last January. On the completion of one term he was appointed to the training cruiser Frobisher for a further term, after which he left the United Kingdom for Australia to join a ship of the British • Pacific Fleet in which he will serve his time as a midshipman. Naval Cadets B. F. Goddard (Palmerston North) and J. D. Gresson (Christchurch) entered the R.N.Z.N. at the same time as Cadet Anderson, and advice has been received that the three have been promoted to the rank of midshipman. The Minister also stated that cadetships in the R.N.Z.N. for 1945 had been granted to lan S. Munro. Eric R. Ellison (both of Christchurch) and Henry R. Simmonds (Dannevirke) in the executive, supply and engineering branches respectively. These cadets will sail for England toward the end of this month.
