PLEASANT POINT TOWN BOARD

Monthly Meeting

At the monthly meeting of the Town Board. Mr M. F. Maze (chairman), reported that there were hopes that the district would be favoured by the settlement of a resident doctor if the housing difficulty could be overcome. A report on the town clock was tabled, and it was decided to have repairs carried out at an early date. A donation of one guinea was made to the library, and permission given to the committee to erect extra shelves. The South Canterbury Power Board gave notice regarding a proposed loan of £40,000 for development and extension throughout the district, with a rating of 37-thousandths of a penny in the £. . Information was received from the Transport Authority regarding a method of enabling experienced exdrivers to obtain licences. It was decided to take further steps to secure State houses for Pleasant Point. A protest was lodged against the action of the Public Works Department on a recent occasion in shutting off the water supply. Members pointed out the risk involved in case of fire. Mr L. C. Craythorne reported on the recent local bodies’ conference at Dunedin. The Athletic Club was granted permission to use the domain for its sports meetings. In order to cope with maintenance work it was decided to purchase another horse.

School Committee

At the monthly meeting of the District High School Committee, the chairman, Mr W. J. Halkett, reported that the swimming pool was nearing completion. No reply had been received from the Education Board to representations made concerning the provision of a house for the secondary assistant master. The headmaster’s report showed that the increased roll in the primary department entitled the school to another assistant. Reference was made to the forthcoming visit of four Lincoln College lecturers, and to a School Association meeting to be addressed by Mr C. P. Vautier on commercial education. A large team of athletes from both' local schools would take part in the South Canterbury meeting next week. War Memorial Mr M. F. Maze presided over a meeting of the committee wnich discussed various aspects of the scheme for a community centre as a war memorial. Eventually it W'as decided to consult the architect on some of the points involved, and, in the meantime to postpone the 1945 appeal for funds. A gala day has been fixed for December 29, and the possibilities of a tug-of-war contest are to be considered.

Welcome Home Social There was a good attendance at the Coronation Hall on Wednesday evening when the Orari Patriotic Committee extended a welcome to Charge Sister N. Carter (M.1.D.) and Seaman Leslie Vernall. Mr R. E. Mcllwrick, chairman of the committee extended a welcome on behalf of the residents of Orari and presented each with a parcel of cigarettes and to Seaman Vernall a fountain pen, he not having received a presentation before the leaving on active service. Mrs G. A. N. Macdonald, on behalf of the Red Cross, Commander A. D. Boyle, on behalf of the Navy and Mr A. J. Black on behalf of the R.S.A. also snoke. Nurse Carter and Seaman Vernall each replied thanking all for the evening and the gifts. They also thanked the Orari Basketball Social Club for the many cakes received while overseas. Music was supplied by an orchestra, while Mr A. Henderson supplied a supper extra. Monte Carlo dances were won bv Ml' and Mrs S. Henderson and bv Miss C. Weavers and Mr J. Parrish. Mr J. Moffatt was M.C.
