Patriotic Committee
Mr P. J. Keenan, who presided at the monthly meeting of the Patriotic Committee, said that a social at which nine servicemen were welcomed home was held in September, and had been a success. The balance-sheet showed a net profit of £l3/ 0 2. As seven more men had returned, it was agreed that a welcome home social be held on either October 12 or 19. inquiries to be made regarding the hall. The secretary read a list of names of men and women entertained since the outbreak of the war, the total being 119. Forty-three men and one woman had yet to return. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr H. Annan for a gift of two trays to be disposed of in aid of the patriotic fund. Unseasonable Weather Recent weather has resembled midwinter more than spring, and hills heavily coated with snow give the lie to any claim that spring is here. The weather cleared on Wednesday night, and a frost of 131 degrees was recorded on Thursday. It is during the first weeks of October that most of the lambing in the district takes place, and the rain, snow and cold winds have played havoc with young lambs. Losses are reported to be severe, more than 100 carcases having been counted on some farms. ,
