RICCARTON NOTES

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH. Oct. 4. L. J. Ellis was in charge when Royal Rae left for Wingatui last night. His injured ankle continues to improve, but when he went south Ellis had no intention of riding at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting. J. Phillips is looking after the home team, including Golden Souvenir and Bruce who are in good order for a trip to Trentham. Centime is under the care of C. H. Fairman while L. Cavalier is absent at Wingatui. Armont is to have a spell and he may not resume work till after Christmas. Eudora has two engagements at the Dunedin meeting, but will start in the Novice Handicap in preference to the Dunedin Guineas. Though Palomino is in the McLean Stakes list and Armont in the Dunedin Guineas, they will not make the trip to Wingatui this week. A. McAulay is busy with a four-year-old gelding by Siegfried from an unnamed Robespierre mare. He is a well-grown brown and he shapes like being useful in the autumn. Of the Riccarton two-year-olds who will race in the McLean Stakes on Saturday. Palm Bearer, the Coronach filly in F. D. Jones’s stable, has done some very smart gallops while Kazimor and Lakhnau, the Theio fillies in F. A. Roberts’s team, have both shown promise of being smart. Tire three-year-old filly, Fearless, who has been on the easy list since the eve of the Grand National meeting, as the result of ricking a joint, has made good progress and H. and A. Cutts may have her racing at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Though small, she is a good galloper, with prospects that she will emulate her helf-sister, Foxleap, by staying at least a mile and a quarter. A. McMullan has Pilot Officer back in work. His legs gave some trouble but he seems quite sound now and he may be ready for a race at Rangiora. Benbecula is training on well and R. Wilson should have the Southland bred gelding at his best for the New Zealand Cup meeting. Golden Souvenir is going on well in his work and the half brother to Kindergarten should be ready to show’ good form at Trentham.
