NEW PERMANENT HEAD
Prime Minister’s Department (NZPA) WELLINGTON. Oct. 1. Mr A D. Mclntosh, who has been chosen as the new permanent head of the Prime Minister’s Department, has had a rapid rise in the service of the Government, and is still in his thirties. In his new position he will retain the office'of Secretary of External Affairs to which he was appointed in 1943 when a Separate Department of External Affairs was set up. Mr Mclntosh was educated in Marlborough and graduated Master of Arts at. Victoria University College. He entered the public service as a youth in the Labour Department, where he was employed in the departments library. Later he joined the staff of the Parliamentary Library. and was awarded a Carnegie travelling scholarship in library practice, visiting the United States and Europe. Not long afterwards he was appointed to the Prime Minister’s Department as research officer during the Prime Ministership of Mr Forbes. He was secretary of file War Cabinet, until its dissolution. » . . With the retirement of Mr C. A. Jeffery the practice of separating the offices of permanent head of the department end chief private secretary to the Prime Minister has been resumed. and Mr W. R. Harvey will hold the latter position.
