STRIKE ULTIMATUM

Miners Demand Carriages (N.Z.P.A.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 28. The miners at the Fukemiro and Taupiri mines, near Huntly, . have threatened to down tools within the next fortnight unless carriages are provided for their conveyance to and from the mines on the private railways running to Rotowaro and Pukemiro stations. An ultimatum to strike in 14 days unless their demands are acceded to was served on the superintendent of the mines and the controller, it is understood, last Monday. A representative of. one of the companies stated to-day that the men at Taupiri had been using trucks on the short run of about three-quarters of a mile since 1917, and those at Pukemiro since 1914. They' now complained that cinders from the engines got in their eyes. The matter was referred to the Waikato Mines Control Board, but to date no decision had been reached. The mines controller, Mr C. E. Benney, to whom the matter was referred, said that if satisfactory arrangements could be made between the Government and the companies as to the cost of providing carriages, and if they were available, the companies could be requested to run them.
