RACING ON AND OFF THE TRACK

First race at Methven at 12.0. First race at Wingatui at noon. The A.J.C. Derby and Epsom Handicap are to be run to-day. L. J. Ellis will not be able to ride at the Otago Hunt meeting. Frontal Attack, Foxbridge Cape, Hammerhead, Lough Allen and Racilla have been withdrawn from the Dunedin Guineas. Francolin has left bay, chestnut, brown and black progeny. It was expected that to Nizami she might produce a grey, but her yearling by that sire is a bay. Francolin has had eight foals, six of which are fillies. Mr W. J. Dore and Mr M. Meehan have both arrived in Sydney to see their horses race at Randwick. Eighteen maidens are included in the 25 acceptors for the President’s Hack at the Otago Hunt meeting. Among them are Knight Crusader, Western Front, Waiau King, Victory Flight, Tenor Royal and Te Anau Lady, who have been left in the Guineas a week later. Lord Broiefort appears to have recovered from the injury inflicted on him on Grand National day. He is an acceptor for the hurdle race and the jumpers’ flat at the Otago Hunt meeting. The going should suit him, but in the hurdle race he has been raised Illb for his win at Washdyke. Girl Friend, who will carry No. 1 in the President's Hack at Wingatui has not raced since the Beaumont meeting on Easter Monday. On that day she won the Roosevelt Handicap by three lengths and with a 71b penalty finished four lengths in front in the Air Force Hack, but was disqualified owing to her rider weighing in 41b short. Immediate won the Great Easter (7 furlongs), Timaru Cup (11 furlongs) and Cornwall Handicap (10 furlongs) last autumn and winter so that the mile in the Epsom is a distance that should suit the big gelding. His principal danger appears to be Peter Riddle’s representative Shannon, who was a class two-year-old and seems to have struck top form at four. Excluding Josedale Grattan, who is likely to resume stud duty, there are 12 eligibles in sight for the Trotting Cup with a 4.22 classification. They are Haughty 4.17, Bronze Eagle 4.18, Countless 4.19, Loyal Friend 4.20, Dusky Sound 4.21, Gold Bar 4.21, Hardy Oak 4.21, Indian Clipper 4.21, Burt Scott 4.21, Integrity 4.22, Double Peter 4.22, War Guard 4.22. There are seven on 4.23, of which Knave of Diamonds and Volo Senwood look the best. The Trotting Cup, with a purse of £7500 and a limit of 4.22, has come a long way in 45 years from a stake of £l5O and a class of 5.0. Trots at Methven The Methven Trotting Club’s annual meeting is to be held to-day. Oversize fields are anticipated in most events and backers will face some difficult problems. Horses with form to recommend them include:— Drayton Trot: Jack Daly, Rerewaka, Walter- Jingle. Westward Ho Handicap: Renown’s Pride, Donald Dinnie, Pony Express. Methven Cup: Lucky Loyal, Gold Peg, Nola Scott. Mt. Harding Handicap: Gamble King, Czardas, Plunder Bar. Avonmore Handicap: Chinook, Sunny Nelson, Galvena. Riverbank Trot: David Dryden, Royal Dale, Calumella. Mt. Hutt Handicap: Sand Maid, Pony Express, Renown’s Pride. Holmes Memorial: Jack’s Son, Technique, Play Safe. Otago Hunt The Otago Hunt Club’s meeting has drawn some big fields, though in one or two cases the class is not strong. Tire Wingatui track is likely to be on the heavy side. The following may be in demand:— Sea view Hurdles: Bali, Sandy Cape Lunaria. Brock ville Trot: Redcliffe Direct, Special Effort, Stimulant. Otago Hunt Cup: Strip, Steward, Filibeg. President’s Handicap: Sunny Course Gold Lance, Sumra. Tally-Ho Handicap: Sphere, Foxchase, Psalm. Wingatui Trot: Aberhall, Huntingdon Lass, Leonin. Hunters’ Flat. Flying Hawk, Turnstile, Boolamskee.
