BOMBAY RIOTS

Deaths total Eleven (8.50 pan.) BOMBAY. Sept. 28. More rioting occurred after nightfall, but mostly on a small scale. Casualties now total 17 dead. During the afternoon rioting flared up when two hostile groups fought a pitched battle in the heart of the city Six persons were injured before the nolice rushed in and dispersed the combatants. A later message states that the troops were called out to aid the civil authorities. The troops are at present standing by at police headquarters ready for action, if needed. The Associated American Press correspondent says that tension is mounting this morning after a troubled night. Incidents in the Hindu-Moslem disturbances included setting fire to a masque and frequent stone-throwing Another stabbing is reported, bringin" the total of confirmed deaths to 18. More than 75 are in hospital with knife wounds. Moslems are holding prayer meetings. Many Hindu workers had not reported for work this morning, pending the outcome of the Moslem gatherings in the mosques. Reuter's correspondent at Bomoav says that the police opened fire at two places in Bombay to disperse the crowd. The riot situation took a new violent turn.
