DEVELOPMENTS IN ARGENTINA

Strong American Reactions Sanctions Proposed Bv Telegraph —N Z Press Assn CoyvriKhi (10.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Sept. 28. More than 1000 prominent persons have been arrested at Buenos Aires since Wednesday. A State Department spokesman said that a general review of the United States policy regarding the Argentine was imminent, because of the recent political developments there. Meanwhile several Congressmen advocated the breaking of diplomatic relations and the imposition of economic sanctions, which would result in the imposition of a state of siege. The former American Ambassador (Mr Spruille Braden), who is en route to Washington from Argentina, said in Puerto Rico that the American nations could not sit idly by watching the course of events in Argentina. He added that he was shocked, but not surprised, by developments. Mr Braden added: “The other peoples of this hemisphere cannot be indifferent to the fact that the Farrell regime has again resorted to extreme measures, including the imprisonment of patriotic citizens whose sole desire is a return of their country to representative government. To be indifferent would be a denial by the American people and also by the Governments of the principles agreed on at the Mexico City conference, and still more of the ideals for which such infinite sacrifices were made in the war. I am confident that the American peoples will not fail in defence of the common purpose. Mr Braden estimated that more than 30 per cent, of Argentinians were pro-democratic and friendly to the United States. The Farrell Government is planning a counter-demonstration to the democracy rally of September 19. All public employees will be forced to participate. The Buenos Aires correspondent of the “New York Herald-Tribune” says that the presidents of at least three of the six national universities have been arrested. The professors and students struck as a mark of disapproval. The police, it is reported, have been ordered to occupy the universities. The Argentine Foreign Minister (Senor Juan Cooke) issued a midnight communique stating that the state of siege in Argentina in no way affects the march towards constitutional normality, which the Government wants as soon as possible. When the Government lifted the previous state of siege on August 6. it had no idea that the ample liberties provided by your laws would be utilised for conspiracy manoeuvres. The Peruvian Senate adopted a resolution reaffirming sympathy with the Argentine people and expressed the hope that civil rights would soon be restored.
