Women’s Club Annual Meeting In the report presented to the annual meeting of the Temuka Ladies’ Bowling Club, it was stated that various competitions and a series of euchre parties had been held in aid of patriotic funds. Little travelling had been done during the season, but the club was represented by Mesdames F. M. Martin, R. Thistleton and H. Wilson in the South Canterbury team which played at Timaru for the Sampson Bowl. The A grade singles, the Strange Rose Bowl and the president’s trophy were won by Mrs G. I. Marshall, who also won the Champion of Champions singles competition in Timaru. Mrs D. C. Clark won the B grade singles and annexed the Braemar. Memorial Cup and Mrs G. Hancox’s trophy. The Fletcher Shield was won by Mesdames Thistleton and W. Frisby, and Mr Bowman’s trophies for the rinks competition by Miss McGillen, Mrs Cross. Mrs Wilson and Miss Thomson (s). A handicap singles competition was won by Mrs Marshall, with Mrs Thistleton runner-up. Thanks were extended to all who had assisted the club, Mr L. A. Nicholas for giving a lamb, Messrs E. Johansen and J. Gourley for supervising the competitions. Mr F. A. Joynt for auditing the books, Dr. Mclnnes and members of the Men's Bowling Club for their assistance. Mr A. C. Watson and the Domain Board staff: also Mr H. J. Murphy for giving a silver cup and for the keen interest he took in club activities. It was decided to suggest to the Centre that nominations for inclusion in the team to play at Christchurch for the Sampson Bowl be one rink and one emergency chosen by the club selectors. Obituary Mrs Sarah Johnson, who died on September 24 at the age of 81 at her residence, Canal Road, was well-known and respected in the Temuka district. Bom in the Shetland Islands. Mrs Johnson came to New Zealand in 1913. when she and her husband purchased a farm in the Temuka district. Her spinning wheel came with her to New Zealand and, as her skill became known, her services were in demand by Women’s Institutes and the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union as a demonstrator of Fair Isle patterns, rug making and other handcrafts. Mrs Johnson took a keen interest in breeding poultry and was a familiar figure at local poultry shows, gaining many prizes. She joined the Temuka Presbyterian Church shortly after she came to New Zealand and took a live interest in its affairs. She is survived by one son. Mr Andrew Johnson (Temuka), and two daughters. St. Peter’s Tennis Club A decision to enter a team in the Temuka Town and County Tennis Association was made at the annual meeting of the St. Peter's Tennis Club presided over by the Rev. W. Wisdom. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr H. Talbot; president, the Rev. W. Wisdom; vice-president, Mr L. A. Nicholas; secretary and treasurer. Miss J. Joynt; ladies’ captain. Joynt and Opening day will be the first Saturday in October.] Arowhenua School A keen interest is taken by pupils of the Arowhenua Native School in the projects organised by the Temuka Group of the Schools Agriculture Clubs. Gardening Circle Members of the Gardening Circle of the Temuka Women’s Institute held their monthly meeting at the residence of Mrs F. A. Joynt, hostesses for the occasion being Mesdames Joynt and A. J. Chrystall. Arrangements were made for a spring flower show, and a competition for spring flowers resulted as follows: Mrs M. J. Fitzgerald and Mrs E. C. Oldfield (equal) 1. Mrs J. Roonev 3. A vote of thanks was passed to the' Temuka Progress League for a donation of £5 toward the upkeep of the garden plot at the railway station.
