AORANGI CLUB

Annual Meeting At the annual meeting of the Aorangi Tennis Club the election of officers resulted: Patrons, Messrs J. P. Newman and V. D. Fraser; president, Mr P. W. Young; vice presidents, Messrs H. L. Roberts and M. A. Raymond; honorary secretary, Mr E. G. S. Raymond; hon. treasurer, Mr P. W. Young; club captain, Mr L. Eames; vicecaptain, Mr A. Manchester; committee, Misses M. V. Wood, Messrs H. L. Adam, L. Gasson and E. W. Riley; auditor, Mr G. Somerville; delegates to Association, Messrs H. L. Adam and L. Eames. Last season, stated the annual report, found the club at its lowest ebb m senior membership. The . constant flow of members into the Forces had been most marked, and it had been impossible to build up the membership. The junior membership continued to increase and was a valuable aspect of club activity. The balance-sheet showed a loss on the year of more than £lB brought about by supplying tennis balls for all club activities. With the present reduced membership it would be necessary to maintain the annual subscription with a view to applying funds for repairs to the courts and redemption of the mortgage. With the satisfactory junior membership. it 'was possible to run boys’ and girls’ club championships. These were run on two Saturday mornings and the winners were J. D. Adam and P. Young. In the South Canterbury junior championships J. D. Adam regained the under 18 title; L. Milne won the boys under 15, and Gretchen Young was runner up in the girls under 15. While no official games were conducted by the Association, several enjoyable games were held with other clubs, although it was difficult at times to field suitable teams. The club championships were reinstituted for tha first time in five years. The winners were W. E. Renton and Miss S. Ussher.
