Italy’s East African Colonies

Ethiopia’s Claims (7.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 25. The Washington correspondent of the “New York Times” learns that Emperor Haile Selassie asked the Big Five to turn over Eritrea and Italian Somaliland to Ethiopia and protested against the Loudon Council decision to hear Italy’s case without granting Ethiopia a hearing. In communications addressed to the Council of Foreign Ministers, Haile Selassie declared that his claims to Eritrea and Somaliland were stronger than those of any other nation. It is understood that the Truman administration has agreed to grant the Emperor the right to put his claims before the Council in writing, but denied him the right to be heard before the Council.
