ALL TRACE LOST
A.I.F. Prisoners From Rabaul (7.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, Sept. 26. Between 700 and 1090 Australian prisoners of war evacuated by the Japanese from Rabaul about June, 1942, appear to have been lost. Announcing this in the House of Representatives to-day, the Minister of the Army iMr F. M. Forde) said it had not been possible to trace the movement of the vessel carrying the troops after its departure from Rabaul and apprehension is felt that it failed to reach its destination. Urgent instructions have gone forward to field formations to make inquiries from all possible sources. The interrogation of prisoner of war camps commanders, guards and interpreters from Rabaul is proceeding.
