BOXING
Phillips Makes Comeback (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 25. In an eight-round heavyweight boxing contest in the Albert Hall, the 34-year-old Eddie Phillips, esaging a come back, gave a stone weight, eight years of age and a sound beating to the Swedish heavyweight champion, Olle Tandberg.
Phillips won easily on points. Tandberg was game but the issue was never in doubt after Phillips toppled the Swede for a count of nine in the second round.
Stevens v. Hanham
The report that Cliff Hanham has made a thorough preparation for tonight’s contest, against Roy Stevens for the former's middle-weight title in the Theatre Royal, indicates that he has no false notion of the challenger’s ability. Hanham anticipates one of the hardest battles of his career. Stevens will realise a long cherished ambition to-night when the gong signals the start of the title fight. With the middle-weight crown the trophy of the winner, Stevens will attempt to dethrone the ruling monarch. His credentials for the job are a lethal left and right which have strewn his professional pathway with other aspiring candidates. The truth or otherwise of the adage, "Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown," will be demonstrated to-night, in what promises to be one of the best bouts ever witnessed in Tiniaru.—P.B.A
