STAR CLUB

Two-day Matches Favoured Supporting two-day matches for the coming season, providing two competitiqns are held, the annual meeting of the Star Cricket Club agreed that the club could enter two teams. Because wet weather caused the abandonment of so many competition games last season, weekly subscriptions had suffered, stated the annual report, but in spite of this the club had emerged from a difficult season with a small credit balance. A high standard of cricket had been played during the season, the club winning both the Tweedy and Bristol Cups. It was the wettest summer on record and matches had to be abandoned on seven occasions.

“During the coming season, many players will be returning from overseas and the prospects look bright,” continued the report. “To our returned servicemen we extend a welcome and an invitation to resume an active part in the club again.” At the end of last season, the Fairfield Club was entertained by the Star Club on the occasion of their challenge for the Bristol Cup. The match was played in a fine spirit and was possibly the most enjoyable match of the season. At the end of the game, an offer -was made to the Fairfield Club, that in the event of the Star Club winning the South Canterbury competition in 194546, it would defend the Bristol Cup in Ashburton. The following club members gained representative honours during the season:—H. Button, V. Hahn, R. Milligan and R. Prattley. Since last season the death had occurred of Mr F. Stewart, a life member of the club, said the president, Mr A. H. Fraser. Mr Stewart had been one of the foundation members and an enthusiastic worker at all times. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried in silence.

On his retirement from the position of secretary, which he has held for the last 10 years, Mr H. O. Button was unanimously elected a life member.

Subscriptions were fixed at 2/6 .. playing Saturday for members over the age of 18 at November 1 and 1/6 for those under that age. The securing of a practice wicket and the fixing of an opening- date were left to the committee.

The election of officers resulted.— Patron, Mr A. E. S. Hanan: president, Mr A. H. Fraser; vice-presidents, Messrs E. H. Button, J. Halkett, J. D. Rodgers, R. Seaton, A. G. Knowles, F. P. E.
