COMMERCIAL LIFE PARALYSED
Lift Workers’ Strike (8.55 pun.) NEW YORK. Sept. 25. Hundreds of thousands of workers remained idle and vast segments of New York’s commercial life were paralysed as the strike of lift drivers completed the second day with every prospect of the situation becoming worse. It is expected that 1200 apartment houses may be affected to-morrow. So far the strike is limited to 2000 skycrapers and other business buildings. The city’s biggest industry, garment manufacturing, is almost completely halted. It is estimated that 250.000 clothing workers are idle, because they refused either to cross the picket lines or to climb the dozens of stair flights to the shops. The usually teeming garment section is a ghost town.
