SHERWOOD DOWNS At the September meeting of the Sherwood Downs Women's Institute, which was presided over by Mrs A. B. Mackenzie, appeals for assistance were received from Stratheona Home Training Hostel and the Lepers’ Christmas Appeal Fund. It was decided to support both these appeals ir. the usual manner. The president’s letter from “Home and Country” was read by Mrs Mackenzie, who also gave a talk on a recent trip to the North Island. Mrs Anniss gave the gardening notes for the month and a practical demonstration on rose pruning was given by Mrs Ross. The “golden thread” on the life of Longfellow, which had been prepared by Mrs Lundie, was read by Mrs Rayne. The resignations of Mesdames West and Hiscoke were received with regret. A letter was received from Mrs W. Scott of Fairlie expressing thanks for a parcel of garments for the Lady Galway Guild. Competitions resulted: Knitted bootees, Mrs Lundie 1. Mrs Anniss and Mrs Clarkson (equal) 2, Miss Anniss 3. Home-made soap, Mrs Clarkson 1, Mrs Cuthbertson 2. Mrs Lundie 3. Bloom, Mrs Ross 1, Mrs Anniss 2.
