boxing GOOD EXHIBITION

Hanham Beats Caltaux Decision On Points With a physical disadvantage in height, weight and reach, Vic Caltaux, weiter-weignt champion, was beaten on points by Cliff rianham, lightheavy and middle-weight champion, m a proiessional boxing contest sponsored by the Timaru boxing Association in the Theatre Royal last evening. Although beaten Caltaux was not disgraced. He was the aggressor for most of the time and did everything possible to discount his opponent’s physical advantages. Since ne could not box at long- range because of his opponent’s consideraoly longer reach, Caltaux accepted the hazard of going for the body. It was inevitable that he should leave himself open at times as he swung his punches low, and Hanhani found Caitaux’s chin with hard rights that sapped his strength. Judged by the best standards it was a good light and pleased the large number of spectators. Caltaux leaves lor Australia to-day to fulfil a contract. The weights were: Hanhani list 51b, Caltaux lOst 101 b. Pinning his faith in a body attack, Caltaux persisted in trying to work under his opponent’s guard, but Hanham, after the preliminary rounds, found a good counter in a left hook which he varied nicely with a straight left. After dazing Caltaux with two hard rights in the ninth. Hanham connected with a solid right cross to his opponent’s jaw in the eleventh and, following up the advantage, jumped in with a two-fisted attack which had Caltaux lying almost helpless across the ropes. Only his fighting spirit and boxing instinct kept him in an upright position. As the gong clanged both boxers were the worse of wear. Now in the ascendancy, Hanham forced the pace in the following round and threw many right-hand punches for the chin. A few connected as Caltaux moved away, but they were not dangerous. Still boring Caltaux was going for the body, but he ran into a stiff right jolt that set him on his heels. Sensing victory by the short route, Hanham used his right frequently, but with varying degrees of success. In the remaining rounds the winner relied mostly on a straight left and was never in danger. In the early rounds Caltaux had the better of the exchanges, following in a left lead to the body with a right swing. Occasionally he shifted his attack to the head, but Hanham’s chin was always safely tucked away. Many potent rights got Hanham high on the head, but he was never troubled by them. The fifth round was the loser’s best. Weaving as he went in he slipped under his opponent’s lead and connected solidly with rights and lefts to the body. Hanham, who had used his right sparingly, jabbed his opponent’s back with a left, and, following fast, scored with a good right to the jaw. Exchanges were of a fairly even nature until the ninth, when Hanham landed a damaging punch to Caitaux’s chin. Caltaux fought his head clear and was attacking at the bell. Again in the tenth Caltaux was on the receiving end of a right cross, and, although momentarily dazed, he returned to the attack. In the eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth rounds Hanham gained the ascendancy with damaging rights to the chin, and in the following rounds relied on a straight left to win the verdict. Amateur Bouts Four good amateur bouts served as preliminaries to the main contest. Results were as follows: Norton, 7st 91b, beat Prue (Waimate), 7st 21b.
