OVERSEAS SHIP IN PORT
Victory Celebrated The huge V electric sign on the funnel of an overseas ship in port was part of the victory celebrations on board last night. The occasion was also celebrated by a victory dinner consisting of Empire soup, Dover sole. Canadian asparagus, Surrey fowl, and Canterbury lamb. The officers and crew had good reason to celebrate peace. All of them have undergone the hardships and dangers of wartime service in the Merchant Marine, and numbers of them have been awarded medals. One of the crew was a prisoner in the Altmarck when it was taken by a British warship in a Norwegian fiord, and the ship’s baker has been torpedoed six times. The steamer, which is only two years old, was constructed in Glasgow, is modern in every respect, and is an all-electric ship. The lights at the ship’s masthead are the signal “V for Victory ”
