TAXI LICENCES

Renewals Granted Sitting Of Licensing Authority The sitting of the No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr T. H. Langford) was completed at Timaru yesterday morning. Associated with Mr Langford were Messrs J. S. Haywood (District Officer. Transport Department). C. H. Rands (Rehabilitation Department) and A. C. Benzie (Railways Department). Most of the applications yesterday were for taxi-cab licences, the term of renewal being for three years, unless otherwise stated. shareholders in Gold Band Taxis Ltd., applied for the renewal of 15 cab authorities. Arthur A. Solomon, secretary of the company, said that there were 10 shareholders in Gold Band Taxis Ltd., six of whom were drivers. At present 16 drivers were employed. Seven former drivers were serving in the forces, both overseas and in the Dominion. Mr Rand said that the policy of the Rehabilitation Department was opposed to multiple taxi licences. It preferred to see owner-drivers encouraged which would give an opportunity to exservicemen to establish themselves in the taxi business.

In reply to Mi' Rand, Mr Solomon said that the question of admitting ex-servicemen drivers to partnership had been considered by the shareholders, but nothing would be done until they had all returned from overseas. Mr Solomon gave an assurance that the question would be seriously considered when the men returned. Mr Rand: In that case would I be in order to request that the licences be granted for one year? The Authority agreed to the suggestion and 15 cab authorities were granted accordingly. An application for a new taxi-cab licence, wdth one cab authority in Timaru by C. H.
