QUEST FOR BUFFALOES

Loss In Philippines Steps are being taken by UNRRA to obtain wild buffaloes from Northern Australia and tame them for use in the Philippines. The Acting-Director of UNRRA in the South-west Pacific area, M. F. S. Gaines, who has returned to Sydney from the Philippines, said that about 100,000 buffaloes are needed to replace the herds of domesticated water buffalo destroyed by the Japanese. It. was hoped that the Commonwealth would be able to meet part of the requirements. Aerial photographs had shown great herds of wild buffaloes in the Northern Territory and in the northernmost part of Western Australia. The destruction of buffaloes by the Japanese has curtailed food production both in the Philippines and the Dutch East Indies. For initial operations in the Pinlippines UNRRA recently allocated to the Government one million dollars' worth of food, clothing and other supplies, said Mr Gaines. It was honed to have an office in Manila to assist the Government in the distribution of supplies. Black marketing was rampant but UNRRA would ensure that supplies went only to those who needed them.
