Feelings Break Bounds
(N.Z.P.A.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 13. The premature announcement that Japan had accepted the Allies’ final terms caused much excitement and some short-lived celebration in the city. Many Aucklanders took the first statement with reserve because of its origin from Ottawa instead of Washington, but their pent up jubilation was too much for some young people and groups of them roamed Queen Street waving flags and blowing whistles. A number of firms dressed their facades with flags of the Allies, and several stores sold dozens of small Union Jacks within an hour or so. From some upper storey windows brief clouds of torn paper fluttered down into the streets. The celebrations ended almost as ouickly as they began, and Aucklanders in general settled down again to wait for the official announcement.
