Sister E. Conlan, who has been matron of Talbot Hospital for several years, is retiring from the nursing profession at the end of this month. She was the guest of the Timaru branch of the Registered Nurses’ Association at an afternoon function last week, when she received a presentation from members. Mr A. Manning, representative of the Canterbury Education Board on the Timaru High Schools Board of Governors, has been reappointed for a further term of two years. Mr D. McKivett left Timaru on Saturday to rejoin the Kiwi Concert Party. A motion .of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr H. M. Whatman, a member of the Timaru Harbour Board since 1933, was carried in silence at a meeting of the Board last week. During the 12 years he was on the Board. Hopkirk, who has been in charge of the Department of Agriculture Animal Research Station at’ Wallaceville for many years, has accepted an appointment with UNRRA to work in Europe after shorter periods of duly in Sydney and Washington. Dr. Hopkirk, who was awarded the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Science by the University Melbourne in 1934. has had 33 years’ service with the Department, and is author of more than 50 publications dealing with stock diseases in New Zealand—P.A. .
