Community Sinn.—The Community Sing Committee is staging the lirst “sing” of the season at the Theatre Royal to-night. Street-Day Patriotic Appeal.—Friday’s street-day appeal realised £l5B for the Timaru patriotic fund quota. Tlic Mayor ‘Mr A. F. Successful Jumble Sale.—The Mission Circle of the Catholic Women's League conducted a successful jumble sale in St. Patrick’s Hall. Timaru, on Saturday afternoon when £3B 12 - was raised by the sale of clothing, home cookery, preserves and produce and by competitions. Mrs C. Orr. the convener, was assisted by members who acted as stallholders and served afternoon tea and Mesdames W. H. Hall and R. M. Fitzgerald were the judges of a baby show. False Alarm.—A strong smell of burning caused some consternation at the State Theatre on Saturday night and many of the patrons, expecting an outbreak of fire, took fright and started to leave. The programme was temporarily interrupted while the manager announced that there was no cause for alarm as the smell came from the overheating of apparatus behind the stage. The nervous patrons resumed their seats and the programme continued. Public Services Club.—There was an attendance of more than 200 in the Caroline Bay Tearooms for the inauguration of the Timaru Public Services Recreation Club, which the president (Mr R. Heron) said was an organisation to foster good fellowship iu the ranks of 'he various departments of the Public Service in the town and to further the social and snorts activities of members. Cheese Cup.—The Timaru Harbour Board's Cup for cheese has been won this year by the Orari factory. Results of the grading for the 1944-15 season of cheese from the various factories in South Canterbury are as follows (the number of tons graded being in parentheses): Temuka 92.857 (14.28>. Milford 92.313 (50.71). Orari 92.737 (228.5), Cloverlea 92.G52 (123.64), Clandeboye 92.443 (230.7) and Geraldine 92.170 <50.14). As Temuka. Milford and Cloverlea did not export 70 per cent of their produce over the wharves at Timaru they were not eligible for the competition and the cup was awarded to Orari. Last year Cloverlea received the highest grading but did not export sufficient to qualify and Orari took the cup. Timaru Yacht Club.—“ There are at least 30 members of the Timaru Yacht l Club serving - in the Navy and we should do all that we can to encourage the | club.” said the chairman (Mr R. S. Goodman) at a meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board last week when an application was received from the Yacht Club seeking permission to extend the staging to their present facilities at the Port of Timaru. They also asked if the Board could supply old piles for this purpose. It was decided to permit the extension, the Board to supply the timber if available. The work will require the approval of the engineer (Mr B. W* Charman). Worth Only 5/-.—-Clergymen attending the annual Diocesan Synod in Wellington related their experiences concerning marriage fees. One caused much laughter when he told how, on being approached by an intending bridegroom, he was asked what was the
