WHARF WORK
Reduction In Hours | Decision Of Commission | (N.Z.P.AJ WELLINGTON. July 20. A reduction in the hours of water- , side workers on certain vessels has been made by the Waterfront Control Commission. The order applies par- I ticularly to Saturday afternoons and i concerns Auckland. Wellington. Lyt1 tel ton, and Otago. Clause <a) states that overseas food I vessels and intercolonial vessels are i military supplies, vessels discharging . coal, and feeder vessels will work the i hours previously prescribed. Clause (b) states that other overseas I vessels and intercolonial vessels are to work Sundays and to work a night, | shift where three or more continuous i nights' work exists, but no work is to be performed on Saturday afteri noon, except as provided in clause | (d). Clause <c> also states with regard to coastal vessels of over 350 tons and ; coastal vessels under 350 tons discharging cenienet at Wellington that they should not be required to work night ; shift, but shall work Sundays and holidays, and no work shall be performed on Saturday afternoon, except as provided in clause <d>. Clause <d> states that overseas, intercolonial. and all coastal vessels, other I than vessels included in clause 'an shall cease work at noon on Saturday, except where the vessel may reasonably finish by 1 p.m. or 5 p.m.. and permission is granted bv the waterfront controller to work the meal hour to 1 pm. to finish or to work to 5 p.m. to finish. Application to work ,
the meal hour or to '5 pin. must be made to the waterfront controller in sufficient time to enable him to arrive nt a decision before 9.15 a.m. on Satur- ' While onlv one vessel is runnins. the tnterisland steamer express shall be worked on Saturday afternoon at ".vr.tclton. but an investigation shall be made to determine whether Saturday ifternoon work is necessary when two ■essels are engaged in the service.
