Grand National, hut she lias been put I in the Enfield Steeplechase on the .air.c <!; y. It. was proposed to keep her for the Hunt Clip at Hastings, a race she won last year, but apparently a change of programme is under consideration. Boolamskee's mishap in the Winter Hurdles is generally attributed to have been due to being' hustled up to take a jump alongside the leaders. He skidded for some distance on landing. Some good judges declare that he was travelling like a winner at the tune. Epping, like Rakanui is one of the limiting Song family who prefers a firm track. He is to be eased up until the spring. Epping will be 11. next month, but he has not done a great deal of racing. After a couple of outings as a young horse he was not i.. i i nnnissinni.d until last season. Alter the Grand National meeting Flying Spy is to go to the stud. She has had an interrupted preparation this season, and her chances of winning the big Hurdle race again arc not I promising. Flying Spy is by Hunting Song from Lady Qncx, and the Lord Quex strain is proving successful among brood mares. Three years ago the Southland Totalisator Committee was formed to operate the machine on all courses in the province. The Southland Racing Club's contribution to the capital outlay was £l5OO. This has since been refunded, in addition to £2037 rebate from profits. It is now saving £lOOO a year over the cost under the contract system. Mild conditions over the week-end were responsible for a big thaw, and . now commenced to disappear rapidly at the Washdyke course. Yesterday a large number of horses worked on the grass outside the trotting track. The going was sloppy in places, but it should improve rapidly if there is a continuance of the more favourable weather. Mr W. T. Hazlett (president of the Southland Racing Club) at the annual meeting reaffirmed his opinion that the solution of the bookmaking problem was to license bookmakers—to bet on Hie courses. He continued, however, that he did not think tire Racing Conference would ever favour licensing, and the Government was never likely to approve of anything but totalisator belting. At the annual meeting of the Wellington Trotting Club, the president stated that the Government contracted to pay £2BBB per annum for military use of the Hutt Park course, but paid only £1444. It advised that it de- | sired to review the question of rent, since when no further payment had been made, and the outstanding sum was £4332. As the enforced transfer to Trentiiam proved very profitable, the Trotting Club seems to have been particularly fortunate. Valky’s Boy, who won both steeplechase events at the Hunt meeting at Awapuni, is by Gay Boy from Valky *by Valkyrian). Gay Boy is by Colossus from Lady Limond, so that Valky’s Boy has some successful jumping strains in his pedigree. Colossus is responsible for Master Colossus, sire of Master Meruit, and Lirnond left some good leppers, including Royal Limonct (Great Northern and Grand National! and Limbohm (Grand National Hurdles). Sungift, dam of the July Steeplechase winner Kilmanagh, is one Aus-tralian-bred mare by Australian Sun. She was sold by auction at Hastings for 25g'ns. with a foal at foot by Siegfried. (This foal, named Siegii't, was a winner in South Australia). Sungift was in foal to Siegfried, but her offspring was destroyed after an accident on the training track. Mr J. B. Fletcher who purchased Sungift so cheaply, sent her to Siegfried again, the result Kilmanagh. Auckland’s crack sprinter, Sleepy Fox, is to go to Australia for spring races. He has been nominated for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, but it is probable that he will remain in Sydney for shorter races. Trie Warwick Stakes and Hill Stakes, all w.f.a. should suit him. There is also the Epsom Handicap, but in that he is sure to receive a thumping impost—Sol Green notwithstanding. Sleepy Fox has won the lust two Easter Handicaps at Ellerslie. This season he supported his Easter success by a third victory in the Huia Handicap with 10.1. RICCARTON NOTES (Special) CHRISTCHURCH. July 21. I The .snow on the racecourse at | Riccarton is dispersing gradually. Most of the trainers continue to get in some light work with their horses. Some of them are using the sand track in the afternoons, while in oilier cases the home paddocks, on tracks formed by clearing the snow, enable useful exercise to be done. The North Islander.
