He repre- ' sented the council as member of the | South Canterbury and North Otago | Regional Planning Committees, and vis I an executive officer of the South Can- | terbiiry body. School Board of Governors, a posluT.i lie had held since May. 1922, he represented the combined district ol the Borough and County on the Timaru Harbour Board, for wnich body he acted as sinking fund commissioner. During liis long period of residence at Waihaorunga. Mr Whatman took a very active part in the affairs of the district. and for 28 consecutive years held office as chairman of tlie Waihaorunga School Committee. He had also the novel distinction of having been an office-bearer to all churches holding services there. He took an active part in the efforts to have the railway line put through to the area. A strong supporter of the Douglas Social Credit movement and of monetary reform, Mr Whatman was as well a very active member of the W.E.A. and Adult Education movements, of which he was one of the leaders at Waihaorunga and a prominent member at Waimate. He was a Justice of the Peace and a member of the Waimate Savage Club, and found time to write short stories and poems.
