Highfield Sub-Centre “The so-called remit concerning the Polish children did not come from this sub-centre." said the president (Mrs J. M. Jenkins) at a meeting of the Highfield sub-centre of the Red Cross Society after delegates to the recent Centre meeting (Mrs G. Millar and Mrs J. M. Jenkins) had reported matters of interest. After a discussion members were unanimous in their agreement with Mcs Jenkins in the motion moved by her at the Centre meeting: “That it be ascertained from headquarters if Polish girls in New Zealand between the ages of 12 and 15 could be taught to sew their own clothing as part of their general training. Donations were made as follows:—£so toward cost of official Red Cross car; £5O to the Timaru Centre; £5 toward cost of blankets. During the last six weeks 302 garments have been made or mended by members. Used clothing is now being collected and baby clothes are being made for overseas. Since the Highfield Sub-Centre was formed £563/4/1 has been raised by members. In 1939 the membership was 46 and it is now 111.
