RACING ON AND OFF THE TRACK

Handicaps for the Hunt meeting will be declared to-morrow. Nominations for the South Canterbury Hunt meeting total 18'., three fewer than for the last meeiinj two years ago. Signal Officer is in work again at Invercargill, and will be racinj at tire spring meetings. Tt is Intended to retire Foxiana for good after the Grand National meetA high opinion is held at Hast'ngs of Ceremonious, a two-year-old brother to Salutation. The colt has not raced so far, but is being prepared for the maiden race at tlie Hawke's Bay Hunt, meeting in August. The idea of racing Khuria at Washdyke was abandoned, and it is assumed that he will be missing from the Grand National field. Dauber, Great Northern Steeplechase winner, is expected to leave Auckland for Riccarton this week. Amorlad’s poor display in the Parliamentary Handicap is"ascribed to a bout of kidney trouble. The smallest entry at the Hunt meeting is 11, in the Waslidyke Trot. Swingalong and Victory Flight, who were nominated for the Levels Hack Handicap, are two-year-olds, and consequently are not eligible. Brantome has been scratched for the Grand National Hurdles. Scotch Tweed, who is engaged at the Hunt meeting, has done all his racing in Auckland. By Tweed 11, he is owned by Mr W. Hosking, and has been sent to Riccarton to be trained by C. Fairman. High Play and Immediate will probably leave ‘ Wellington for Sydney on August 30. There is more than a possibility that Gulf Stream will travel by the same steamer. Owing to the alterations to the assessments scale, limits for the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s August meeting will be amended, and a new programme issued. Jack Potts’s progeny have won £34.570/10/- this season, a record for any sire in the Dominion. . Victoiy Flight and Swingalong, who missed being eligible for the Levels Hack by three days, have interesting pedigrees. Victory Flight at the moment is a poor relation of Royal Flight. Bonny Flight, Dark Flight and other brilliant members of the Francolin family. Swingalong is a daughter of Raphis. own sister to the immortal Phar Lap. P. Hayvice, who has been disqualified for five years in connection with alleged Irregularity in ownership of the hurdler. Good Fair, is a Wellington man. A year or two ago he had a team of horses racing in his name trained at Riccarton by D. E. Cotton. They included Foxchase, Te Awe Awe, Hippodrome and Others. Mr W. J. Suttie with £5215 will head the list of winning owners in the trotting sport this season. All this was won by Bronze Eagle, whose figures constitute a Dominion record. The highest total ever credited to a New Zealand owner are £7350 won by Mr J. R. McKenzie in 1925-26. O. E. Hooper £4393 is second this year, and Douglas and Smith third with £4250, all won by Double Peter. Other owners to secure over £3OOO are J. R. Henderson £3959 W. J. Doyle £3664 and H. M. Allan £3320 (Blue Horizon and Will Cary).

Twenty-seven years old by official count next month, The Hawk, is still hale and hearty at Te Mahanga. The Martian gelding registered 1.10 1-5 in a two-year-old handicap at Trentham in the 1920-21 season, and continued racing until he had won in New Zealand and Australia the huge sum of £28.201 nearly all of it in rion-handi-cap races. Tire Hawk commenced his career as the property of the Douglas Trustees, but was purchased early by trainer J. M. Cameron, for whom he won over £27,000 for an outlay of about 500gns.

Twenty-two owners have won £3OOO or more in stakes at race meetings this season. They are: Messrs S. S. Taylor (Dunedin) £6698, E. R. Davis and O. Nicholson £6045. W. E. Hazlett and estate J. S. RICCARTON NOTES

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH. July 19. Riccarton racecourse still carries its white mantle, there being little improvement that can be seen. The sand track has been cleared all the way round, to a. width of about 15 feet, which would enable two horses to work abreast. Unfortunately the track is being soaked by water, as the snow melts, and the frost at night makes the ground hard and too slippery to be safe for horses to work. The course manager, Mr W. Main, has been busy in another direction. He has been out with a tractor and a grader and in the paddocks of several trainers he has cleared a circuit, with the result that horses can be given a bit of useful work at home. C. G. Humphries has solved the problem in another way. He has gone to Wash dyke with the team he intends to race there next week and he hopes to get in some track work much sooner than if he had remained at home. The horses he took were Gulf Stream. The Vulture, Gay Fort, Maggiore, Silver Sal and Whackie. also Baffling for his brother, R. E. Humphries. F. Holmes has had bad luck with the Southland owned jumper Spanish Main. He has gone lame in a hind joint and it looks as if he will require a spell.
