COMMUNIST PARTY

Barred From Two Organisations N.Z.P.A.—Special Correspondent (7.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 18. While the recent State by-eiec-tion and Municipal Council elections have shown a fairly substantial growth in the Communist Party, various bodies—Labour and otherwise—are taking steps to eliminate Communist influence from their organisations. Two instances oi' this are reported to-day. The Australian Legion of Ex-servicemen and Women decided to debar any member of the Communist Party from holding oliice in the organisation. This decision, made after a stormy debate at the annual general meeting of the Legion, was endorsed by 45 votes to 32 votes. Three loading members of the Australian Labour Party in the Williamstown district, Victoria, have been excluded from membership by the central executive because of allegations that they are members of the Communist Party. Another "suspected of being a member of the Communist Party" was also excluded. This action conforms with the decision of the Australian Labour Party that members must not belonp to any other political body. Membership in the Australian Labour Party is accepted on a written pledge that the applicants will subscribe to the Labour policy only.
