DOCTORS WILL NOT CO-OPERATE
Free Medicine Scheme (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 31. The Federal Government would not be abie to implement its free medicine scheme on July 1, said Dr. J. G. Hunter, secretary of the Federal Council of the B.M.A. The implementation- of the Pharmaceutical Benefit Act due to come into operation on July 1, he said was dependent on the co-operation of the doctors. The medical profession had objected to the formularj' of medicines fixed by the Government, because it limited the rights of doctors to prescribe for natients. No formulary in existence should meet the full requirements of doctors. Tire scheme would standardise medicine and, because doctors wished to maintain their freedom, they had decided not to co-operate with the Government.
