LOCAL AND GENERAL
Hairpins.—An. improvement in the available supplies of hairpins may be expected in the Dominion shortly. Hairpins sold here are made in England, and until recently, most manufacturers were engaged in 100 per cent war production. At the present time locally-made bobby-nins are also on sale at most retail ships.
Handies and Locks.—Door-handles and locks will be available in greater quantities as the labour position in the United Kingdom eases. Virtually unprocurable for some time, locally, supplies are now increasing gradually. The manufacture of handles and locks has begun in New Zealand. These local products are being used in Government housing schemes.
Brief Court Sitting.—Only three claims were called at the sitting of the Timaru Megistrate’s Court before Mr G. G. Chisholm, S.M., yesterday. One judgment summons case was struck out as the amount owing had been paid, one debt claim was struck out as there was no appearance of the parties; and the third claim was adjourned for one week.
Umbrellas.—There may be more umbrellas on the market within the next few months. Supplies of manufacturing materials, which are now all imported from Great Britain, are easier to obtain. Taffeta, art silk, and oiled cotton are used for the cloth section of umbrellas, and quantities of these materials arrive in New Zealand from time to time.
Boy Scout Bonfire.—“ The bonfire that the Boy Scouts had oh Caroline Bay during the night of the Victory was a good show and they deserve credit for it.” said Mr J. W. Elder, president of the Caroline Bay Association, at the annual meeting of the Association last night. Mr Elder said he thought that the Association could learn something from them, and seeing that this bonfire was so popular, they should try to have something like it during their carnival.
Inquest Opened.—The Coroner, Mr G. G. Chisholm, presided at the opening of the Inquest yesterday on Rosabella Ott, widow, aged 62, of 69 Luxmore Road, Timaru, who collapsed and died while sitting on the bus seat at the corner of Avenue Road and Church Street about 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Evidence of identification was given by Edgar Jabez Lukey, a brother of the deceased. The Coroner ordered a postmortem examination to be made, and adjourned the inquest sine die. SeniorSergeant S. King represented the police.
