SOUND SHELL

Trees Obstruct View

“The Mayor (Mr A. E. S. Hanan) has asked me to report on the removal of the two shrubberies near the piazza, Caroline Bay.” states the Borough curator (Mr A. W. Anderson) in a report to the Timaru Borough Council Reserves Committee.

“At present,"- Mr Anderson continues, “these two shrubberies obscure the view of the Sound Shell and should certainly be removed so that large crowds may see what is taking place at the Sound Shell. Hie mere removal of the shrubberies would not be enough. The two stone walls should also be taken away and replaced by walls with seats placed in such a way as to complete the amphitheatre. This is a big job and involves a relay--ut of the whol~ area between the piazza and the Sound Shell. A large amount of filling is required and the clay cliff at the back should be regraded. “At present the best thing would be to compromise by cutting down all the trees and shrubs to within, say, three feet of the ground so that the view may not be impeded in the meantime. When more labour is available, and the Caroline Bay Association is in a position to assist, the whole question of laying out that area to the best advantage could be gone into. I recommend that this be done.”

The Committee has recommended that the renort be adopted.
