FAIRLIE DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

Parents’ Day ■ Pupils of the Fairlie District High School during the week entertained parents and friends at a function at which dux awards and certificates were presented. The infants, under Miss C. r. Miller, provided a programme of song's and carols, after which they presented their parents with gifts made at school. The little ones then sat down to afternoon tea and were later given presents from a Christr.ias tree. Outside, the older children were seen ♦in gymnastics by senior boys, physical activities by P. IV, a play by Standard 111 and IV boys, Maori stick games to music by High School girls, and massed folk-dancing on the lawn by Standards II to F. II boys and girls. During the afternoon the school was thrown open to the parents for inspection of the children’s work. The chairman of the school committee (Mr J. F. D. Jeune) stated that he thought that the past year had been the best the school had ever had as far as co-operation of parents, teachers and committee was concerned, and he congratulated the headmaster (Mr A. J. Withers) on the result of the years work. He asked the children to continue to take a rightful pride in their school, and to remember that when they left school they were just entering the great university of life. Mr D. C. Kidd, M.P., thanked Clara Jackson, one of the primary school prefects for presenting his wife with a beautiful bouquet. He congratulated the pupils upon their excellent work displayed in the school, and encouraged them to carry on the result of their training when they started out on life’s work. After thanking them for the interesting display he called upon them to give three cheers for their teachers and. committee. Mrs D. C. Kidd then presented the dux awards, primary school certificates and swimming certificates. Mr C. V. Kirke, county chairman, and Mrs Kirke were also present. The dux awards were as follows: Secondary department. Girl, Moira Wareing; boy, Lester Reid. Primary department, girl, Clara Jackson; boy, Jack Edward.
