CLAREMONT PATRIOTIC CONCERT
Good Sum Raised A successful concert in aid of patriotic iunds was given by a Timaru concert party organised by Mr Dick, with Mrs McGowan as accompanist. Songs were sung by Mrs Bailantyne and Miss Ann Kerr, Messrs Edwards and Tooth, cello solos by Mr Dick and saxophone solos were greatly enjoyed. Messrs Conroy's and Edwards’ humorous items were much appreciated. A pullover kindly knitted and given by Mrs Hartley was won by Mr Chittock, who handed it back for auction to bring in a large sum. Children Entertain The annual Claremont school concert given by the pupils was held in the school before a large audience of parents and friends. Two plays, “Cat-cat” and “The Lion’s Cage’’ were given by the juniors and fairy songs and dance by infants. Four dances by Standard 3 and 4 children were Bavarian Clap, Bean Setting and Durham and Virginia reels. Songs and rounds were given by the school choir and a play from “Little Women” by Standard 3 and 4 girls. An amusing play, “Back to Back,” by W. W. Jacobs, acted by seniors, made a happy ending. After supper, provided by parents, a dance was held. Mrs A. McConnell supplying the music. School Picnic On Wednesday the annual picnic was held in the school grounds. In spite of unpleasant weather, there was a large gathering of parents and residents. Races were held, with ice-cream for prizes. After afternoon tea, Mr Cross thanked all those who had supported school functions during the year, and asked Mrs P. R. Talbot to present each child with a book. Highest marks in the school were won by Douglas Cross. Mr Talbot congratulated the club members on their home gardens, especially Ron Quigley, Elwin Talbot, John Andrews, lan Gainsford and Norman Gibson. Margaret Andrews’ lamb and Jim Wyllie’s calf were placed third in the show held by the Levels group, where all the entries showed careful and patient handling by their young owners. Each tiny tot received a toy from the committee before going home. Cheers for committee and teachers brought an enjoyable day to a close.
