GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL

Erection Of Bridge At Skipton Tenders To Be Called At Early Date The erection of the Skipton bridge on the Geraldine-Fairiie main highway was likely to proceed in the near future, tne engineer (Mr J. R- nawcridge) reported at a meeting of the Geraldine County Council. The required amendments to the design had now been received from the Mam Highways Board and new plans would be drawn up. „ ■ A credit balance of £250/7/6 in tne general account and £lB5 in the bridge fund account was reported by Cr. J. Woodhead (chairman of the Finance Committee). The total income from all sources for six months ending September 30 was £13,115/15/11 and the expenditure £10,944/7/4. Receipts for the month totalled £3577/18/9. It was agreed to seek information about costs before arranging for the Highway Board’s road magnet to operate over Geraldine County highways On the suggestion of Cr. G. Edgar, it was agreed that the engineer should carry out an inspection at the Springfield Road railway crossing, where trouble was reported. It was agreed the Council would meet any expense necessary to place the late Thomas Hobson’s grave at Temuka in order. x .. Cr. F. R. Flatman, a member of the executive of the Nev; Zealand Counties Association, reported that a meeting of the representatives of the Geral - dine. Levels. Waitaki. Waimate and Mackenzie Counties would be held in the near future to discuss evidence to place before the Select Committee on Local Government. The chairman 'Mr K. Mackenzie) and Cr. A. J. Davey were appointed to attend the meeting as representatives of the County. Mr F. R. Flatman will attend as convener. It was agreed to install a culvert at Arundel on the application of Mr H. A. Locke. The engineer reported that at the request of ratepayers an alternative route through Bell’s and Green’s properties, 112 chains in length, was surveyed. This was to obviate the race through D. Sugrue’s, where heavy fillings would be necessary. It would feed the new race below Walker’s corner and bring in an additional 60 acres of land, but would not have the advantage of the original proposal which linked up and carried on two dead end races. The engineer also reported that a total of 18 acres of reserves had been prepared for planting this month in trees. Only pinus insignis was obtainable this year. Rifle Shooting The following members have teen selected from the Geraldine County to shoot against the Mackenzie County on Saturday in a Challenge Shield match: L. Beattie, E. Barker. W. S. A suggestion that the River Board should try for a subsidy for any major work in future was made by Mr F. R. Flatman. Mr A. J. Davey: It will be some time before the Catcnment Board can take a responsibility for river control work, and we will be justified in making application for a subsidy. Mr J. Woodhead said that when the Catchment Board completed its investigations it would readily agree that River Boards had had inadequate funds to deal with the problems which they had faced.
