DAMAGE BY FIRE
(N.Z.P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Oct. 2. The biggest fire seen in Invercargill for many years raged for more than an hour in Tay Street to-night. The top floor of J. E. Watson and Company's three-storeyed building was completely burned out, and the ceiling above the first floor occupied by P. Hayman and Company was severely damaged. None of Hayman and Co's.'stock was burned-, but the bulk of It was either ruined or severely damaged bv water. The top floor was a'mass of flames when the brigade arrived, but with its full resources in action it succeeded in confining the flames to the top floor. On this floor there were seeds and other produce, skins, some wool, and stored furniture. The fire was at its height just as the theatres were emptying' out after 10 o’clock and was watched bv a big crowd.
