TEMUKA DOMAIN BATHS

Improvements To Be Effected Approximate Cost £550 Plans submitted by the engineer of the Geraldine County Council (Mr J. R. Hawcriuge) for enlarging the baths at the Temuka Domain ana improving the dressing shed accommodation were discussed at a meeting of the Baths improvement Committee held in the Borough Council Chambers. Representatives from the Temuka Domain Board, the Temuka District High school, St. Joseph’s School and trie Temuka Amateur Swimming Club attended. 'Hie meeting was presided over by the Mayor (Mr L. F. Robins). Two alternative plans were considered, and it was agreed to favour the major scheme at an estimated cost of £550. This will include extending the length of the baths to 100 ft, extending the area of concrete paving around the baths, setting back the present dressing sheds on the south side ol the baths, renovations and extensions to the dressing shed accommodation and the building of additional conveniences and a septic tank. 'Hie secretary (Mr P. G. Shave) reported that donations already received from the Domain Board, the Swimming Club, the Temuka High School, St. Joseph’s School, the Arowhenua Maori School and the Rangitata School totalled £94/15/-.

The chairman said that a number of further donations had been promised. In order to enable tenders to be called for the work, he was prepared to advance £llO to enable the £ for £ subsidy to be collected. He had arranged to interview the Minister of Education (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason) in company with Mr J. Acland, M.P., in regard to the subsidy. It was agreed to take advantage of the offer made by the Mayor and to call a meeting of all sports bodies interested to discuss means of raising the remainder of the money. Winchester Welcome Tlie welcome home tendered to Corporal N. Priddle, Sapper C. Higginbottom and Privates G. Uden and W. O’Neil in the Victoria Hall, Winchester, attracted a large attendance. Mr B Trumper, chairman of the Social Committee, welcomed the men and apologised for the absence of Private Uden, who was unable to attend through illness. Mr Trumper presented each of the guests of the evening with 50 cigarettes and conveyed the best wishes of residents. Mr J. Worthington, representing the R.S.A. extended the best wishes of his Association and promised them any assistance necessary. Corporal Priddle thanked the Patriotic Social Committee, the Winchester Women's Institute and the Junior Red Cross for the parcels they had sent overseas. The evening was spent in dancing. Essay Competition Of the 10 Temuka entries in the National War Savings essay competition, two consolation prizes came to Temuka when the essays from the Timaru Postal District were judged by the Timaru District Committee. The prizes were won by the Rev. Walter Wisdom and by Mrs Wisdom, who will each receive £1 from the prize money. Euchre Winners at a euchre party held in the Labour Hall by the Municipal Band were Mesdames M. Swap, T. Anglem and Messrs R. Taylor and T. Anglem. Mystery prizes were won by Mrs E. Lee and Mr J. Goodman. Mrs T. Anglem was the winner of a competition. Basketball Results of the games played on Saturday were:—First Grade: Winchester 18 beat Clandeboye 17, Temuka Young Women 14 beat Temuka District High School 9. Second Grade: Winchester A 16 beat Winchester B 11, Milford 19 beat Temuka Young Women 10, St. Joseph’s B 12 beat St. Joseph’s A 5. Rugby By a spectacular last minute try, scored by W. Leonard and converted by R. Comer, Temuka District High School defeated Temuka by 11 points to 9 in a bright, open game played at the Oval on Saturday. School showed much Improved form and the defeat of the leading team promises to create increased interest in the competition. Mr G. Lyall was referee. Golf A pairs medal competition was played by members of the Temuka Golf Club on Saturday afternoon. Results were as follows:—Miss Hanifin and F. A. Scannell 186-32-154, Miss Gaffaney and A. C. Watson 205-49-156, Mrs Laurenson and R. P. Lee 198-36-162, Mrs Watson and J. G. Smart 214-51-163, Miss King and J. T. Smart 207-43-164, Mrs Mclnnes and Miss McLeod 197-32-165. Personal The Mayor (Mr L. F. Robins) left for Wellington on Saturday to attend a special conference between the New Zealand Honey Control Board, the National Beekeepers’ Association apd the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon B. Roberts). Motions of sympathy with the secretary (Mr F. J. Robertson), the treasurer (Mr 8. Goddard) and the Curatorranger (Mr F. W. Pellett) in the recent deaths of relatives were passed at the monthly meeting of tiie South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society.
