In these cases, however, the second round was completed immediately after lunch, and the third round commenced in most cases not much behind schedule. The greens were heavy as a result of the rain and overhead conditions were unfavourable. In spite of the conditions there was some tall scoring, but few surprises. P. Munn (Canterbury), skipper of the winning four in 1941, and a member of the champion team on two other occasions, had P. Delargey leading for him, and won each of his four games by fair margins. Another well-known former champion, W. Bremner (Auckland), with E. W. Taylor as lead, won four games 22-17, 30-18, 31-20 and 25-15. D. H. Thomson (Phoenix, Oamaru), who was skip of the team that was runner-up in the fours on one occasion, was unbeaten in his section. His best score was in the third round, when his team won 28-10. J. B. Lawrie (Victoria), one of the most successful skips in his Centre, won all his games by wide margins, scoring 32-9 in the second round. In the fourth game the Victoria team beat L. G. Donaldson’s Carlton pair by 23-13. W. G. Lindsay and the former champion, C. E. Tyrrell (Roslyn) were not hard pressed in the first three games on the North-east Valley Green, but the Hokonui pair, C. Hamilton and D. F. Tait, who won the first three games easily, fully extended them in the final stages of the fourth game, which Tyrrell won 18-17. A. E. Clinkard was leading for H. C. Clarke (Carlton), an ex-singles champion, and this pair won all their games by good margins, including a score of 25-2 against J. Gilbert and S. R. Gemmell (Sydenham). Good Day for Veterans Some of the veterans had a good day, especially A. H. Fisher (St. Clair), for whom A. Burns led. They won three games comfortably, and were given the closest game in the third round by G. G. O'Neill and J. S. Bain (Marlborough R.S.A.), winning 18-16. J. N Gibson and T. Lock (Thorndon), the latter being nearly 80 years of age, won the first three games, but lost the last to a Kaitangata pair consisting of W Neil and J. Haig. At St Kilda the former pairs champion J. S. Anchor (Hamilton), whose lead’ was S. R. Hawken, failed to quality in the section in which the only unbeaten pair was the Ohai combination of R. Reid and R. Cochrane. In a high scoring first game, the Ohai team won its match by 31—14, and maintained form throughout. Post sectional play in the singles and pairs will be commenced to-morrow.
